How to become a Britannia distributor

Britannia makes all its sales through dealers and distributors, and sold to 5,299 of them in 2025-26.3 It publishes one route for new distributors: a web form at britannia.co.in/distributor.1 Here is how its network is built, what the form asks, and what Britannia has said about distributor stock.

How Britannia appoints distributors

  • Direct distributors. Britannia sold to 5,299 dealers and distributors in 2025-26, up from 4,659 the year before. The top 10 took 14.70% of those sales (12.50% the year before).3
  • Below them, rural dealers and sub-stockists. MD & CEO Rakshit Hargave said in August 2026: “the distributor who serves what we call is the rural dealer or the sub-stockist, that structure continues. We have also taken an exercise where we are trying to convert some of the sub-distributors into direct distributors because we have certain advantage there.”5
  • Rural Preferred Dealers. Britannia had about 31,000 in March 2025, up from 19,000 in March 2020.4 In August 2025 Varun Berry, then Executive Vice Chairman & MD, said Britannia is “looking at taking our distributors to be full-scale distributors” in rural markets,6 and its slide that quarter read “Go Direct in Rural markets”.7
  • Mega distributors in the East. Berry, August 2025: “The reason for doing the mega distributor is to get better control on our distribution, making sure that we have to deal with 1 mega entity and make sure that we put in the right processes.”6
  • Right-sizing and more salesmen. The 2024-25 annual report lists “Distributor Right-Sizing”, “Increased Feet-on-Street” and “Increased Service to High Potential Outlets”. Direct reach was 29 lakh outlets in March 2025, up from 20 lakh in March 2020.4

Behind the distributors are 20 owned factories, 6 regional offices and 9 owned depots.3 General trade sits alongside modern trade, e-commerce, quick commerce, institutions, out-of-home points and “urban servicing models”.3

How to apply: the official way

  1. Fill the form at britannia.co.in/distributor

Open britannia.co.in/distributor; the site footer links it as “Distributors” under CONTACT. Fields marked * are mandatory: company name*, annual turnover in ₹ crore for the last financial year, state*, details of existing collaborations, joint ventures, licences or distributorships*, management staff*, operational staff*, companies worked with before*, any past work with Britannia, contact person*, phone*, mobile*, email*, website, business type* and year the business started*.1

  2. Fill it the way a sales manager reads it

Our suggestion, since Britannia publishes no format: under companies worked with before, give each company, your years with it and your monthly turnover; in the details box, name your town and the beats or villages you can cover, your godown size, vehicles and number of salesmen, and your GSTIN.

  3. Know which contacts are which

Britannia’s site shows 1-800-4254449, 1-800-30004530 and feedback@britindia.com under CONTACT, beside the Distributors link; it names no distributor-only number.1 Its offices: Executive office, Prestige Shantiniketan, Tower C, 16th & 17th Floor, Whitefield, Bangalore 560048 (080-37687100); Delhi, 33 Lawrence Road (011-71568000); Mumbai, Reay Road East, Mazgaon (022-71848500/8585); Chennai (044-71536000); Kolkata, 15 Taratola Road (033-71157041/7069); registered office, 5/1A Hungerford Street, Kolkata.2

What you need before you apply

No company in this series publishes a full document list. These are the registrations the law itself asks of a distributor, from the government’s own pages:

RegistrationWhen you need itWhere
GSTOnce your turnover crosses ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura and Uttarakhand), or at once if you sell to another state. Without it you “can neither collect tax from [your] customers nor claim any input tax credit”, so a distributor supplying GST-registered shops registers. (GST Council)gst.gov.in
FSSAIFor any food. From 1 April 2026: Registration up to ₹1.5 crore turnover, State licence ₹1.5–50 crore, Central licence above ₹50 crore. (FSSAI order, 13 Mar 2026)foscos.fssai.gov.in
E-way billFor each consignment over ₹50,000 moved by motor vehicle. Van sales to shops go on a delivery challan. (CBIC, e-way bill FAQ)ewaybillgst.gov.in
E-invoiceOnce your turnover crosses ₹5 crore, for bills to GST-registered shops. (CBIC Notification 10/2023)Your billing software, through the GST e-invoice portal
Shop & EstablishmentSet by each state. Example: Maharashtra registers places with 10 or more workers (Form A) and takes an intimation from smaller ones (Form F), with no fee.Your state’s labour department
Udyam (MSME)Optional and free. For traders its benefit is limited to priority-sector bank loans. (Ministry of MSME)udyamregistration.gov.in

FSSAI rules a distributor must follow

  • Buy and sell food only from and to FSSAI licensed or registered businesses, and keep the records. (FSSAI licence conditions)
  • Give a warranty in Form E on your bill or cash memo when you sell food to a shop.
  • Licences and registrations issued from 1 April 2026 do not expire; the fee is still yearly, and you may pay several years at once. (FSSAI FAQ, 27 Mar 2026)
  • On the application, tick every kind of business that applies: Distributor/Supplier, Wholesale Trade, Storage/Warehouse/Cold Storage.
  • Fees: the last published table is ₹100 a year for registration and ₹2,000 for a State licence for traders. FSSAI said in March 2026 that fees were reduced, so check the amount on FoSCoS when you apply.

What Britannia has said about distributor stock and money

  • No stock pushed at quarter end. Hargave, August 2026: “Britannia is a very disciplined sales system, and we largely do sell-in based on sell-out. So a question like quarter building actually does not arise in our company. So we don't do loading.”5 In plain words: what Britannia bills you follows what you sell to shops.
  • Schemes when the GST rates changed. In September 2025, Britannia reported “de-stocking by Distributors, Channel partners”.8 Berry said its trade support then was “very minimal because we knew that this is going to only push product into the warehouses of distributors and in certain cases, large retailers.”9
  • Credit. Britannia sets a credit period for each customer and groups customers by credit profile, “including whether they are wholesale, retail or institutional customers”. It does not publish the number of days.3
  • Not published: distributor margins, the investment needed, a security deposit, and payment terms. We found no credible source for any of them.

Fake “Britannia distributorship” offers

The common patterns of these frauds are in our main guide.

Once you are appointed: what the work looks like

  • Your buying follows your selling: Britannia says it does “sell-in based on sell-out”.5 Our suggestion: keep a clean record of what each shop took.
  • Expect more company salesmen and more frequent visits to high-potential outlets: Britannia lists “Increased Feet-on-Street” and a “Redefined Sales Program for Outlets”,4 and “more frequent service to HiPotential outlets through revised RTM”.7
  • In rural areas the line between you and a sub-stockist can move: Britannia is converting some sub-distributors into direct distributors and wants to “Go Direct” in rural markets.5,7 Our suggestion: ask in writing which towns, villages and outlets are yours.
  • Territories get redrawn: “Distributor Right-Sizing”, and mega distributors in the East.4,6
  • Britannia does not publish the name of its distributor management system or its retailer ordering app.
