Two companies carry the Patanjali name: Patanjali Ayurved Limited, and Patanjali Foods Limited, formerly Ruchi Soya Industries, which is listed on the stock exchange. In November 2024 Patanjali Foods took over Patanjali Ayurved’s home and personal care business (Dant Kanti, Kesh Kanti and others). Patanjali Foods now sells foods, home and personal care, biscuits, edible oils and nutraceuticals (p. 131).1 So for these product lines, the distributor deals with Patanjali Foods.
- Two tiers. Patanjali Foods’ distribution covers “~8,000 distributors, 84 super distributors”, plus Patanjali franchise stores, e-commerce and direct-to-consumer (p. 131). It runs 96 sales depots and reaches 20 lakh+ retail touchpoints (p. 137).1
- Who bought from it. Patanjali Foods sold to 8,542 dealers and distributors in 2025-26, against 25,370 the year before, and 95.55% of its sales went through dealers and distributors (p. 144).1
- A separate distributor for each product line. The Economic Times reported in Dec 2018 that Patanjali had “appointed separate distributors for different business verticals such as staples, personal care and biscuits”.4 The Patanjali Foods form today also asks which division or brand you want.2
- Franchise stores are not distributorships. Patanjali Mega Stores, Chikitsalayas, Arogya Kendras and Grameen Arogya Kendras are franchise stores, a separate channel from trade distributors (p. 6).1
- Supermarkets. In Nov 2017 The Economic Times reported that one national distributor, the Pittie Group, was Patanjali’s “sole modern trade distributor”.5

What you need before you apply
No company in this series publishes a full document list. These are the registrations the law itself asks of a distributor, from the government’s own pages:
| Registration | When you need it | Where |
|---|---|---|
| GST | Once your turnover crosses ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura and Uttarakhand), or at once if you sell to another state. Without it you “can neither collect tax from [your] customers nor claim any input tax credit”, so a distributor supplying GST-registered shops registers. (GST Council) | gst.gov.in |
| FSSAI | For any food. From 1 April 2026: Registration up to ₹1.5 crore turnover, State licence ₹1.5–50 crore, Central licence above ₹50 crore. (FSSAI order, 13 Mar 2026) | foscos. |
| E-way bill | For each consignment over ₹50,000 moved by motor vehicle. Van sales to shops go on a delivery challan. (CBIC, e-way bill FAQ) | ewaybillgst. |
| E-invoice | Once your turnover crosses ₹5 crore, for bills to GST-registered shops. (CBIC Notification 10/2023) | Your billing software, through the GST e-invoice portal |
| Shop & Establishment | Set by each state. Example: Maharashtra registers places with 10 or more workers (Form A) and takes an intimation from smaller ones (Form F), with no fee. | Your state’s labour department |
| Udyam (MSME) | Optional and free. For traders its benefit is limited to priority-sector bank loans. (Ministry of MSME) | udyamregistration. |
FSSAI rules a distributor must follow
- Buy and sell food only from and to FSSAI licensed or registered businesses, and keep the records. (FSSAI licence conditions)
- Give a warranty in Form E on your bill or cash memo when you sell food to a shop.
- Licences and registrations issued from 1 April 2026 do not expire; the fee is still yearly, and you may pay several years at once. (FSSAI FAQ, 27 Mar 2026)
- On the application, tick every kind of business that applies: Distributor/
Supplier, Wholesale Trade, Storage/ Warehouse/ Cold Storage. - Fees: the last published table is ₹100 a year for registration and ₹2,000 for a State licence for traders. FSSAI said in March 2026 that fees were reduced, so check the amount on FoSCoS when you apply.
What Patanjali has said about distributor money
- Bank finance for your stock. Under Patanjali Foods’ channel-financing scheme, “the financial institution pays the Company directly against eligible inventory purchases, while the distributor repays the financier”. Up to 100% of the invoice can be financed with little or no collateral, subject to the bank (p. 88).1 On 31 March 2026, 1,077 dealers were covered: 270 in Tier I with ₹551.05 crore sanctioned, and 807 in Tier II with ₹95.53 crore sanctioned (pp. 87–88).1
- Pricing. In Nov 2017 The Economic Times reported that Patanjali ran a zero-discount policy across its distribution channels.5
- Margins, credit days and deposit. Patanjali Foods does not publish them, and we found no credible report of them.
Fake “Patanjali distributorship” offers
In Sep 2021 The Tribune reported that Delhi Police’s cyber cell arrested four people who ran fake websites of brands including Amul, Patanjali and Haldiram. Victims were asked to pay “verification” and “security deposit” charges, and police linked the gang to about 126 frauds in 16 states worth over ₹1.1 crore.7
The common patterns of these frauds are in our main guide.
Once you are appointed: what the work looks like
- Paying for stock. With channel financing the bank pays Patanjali Foods for your stock and you repay the bank (see above).1
- Pass on GST cuts. When a GST rate falls, the lower price must reach the shop. In 2019 the National Anti-profiteering Authority sent notices to “about 10 of Patanjali’s biggest distributors”, The Economic Times reported in Feb 2019.6
- The Order Me app is for consumers. Patanjali’s “Order Me” app, with 10 lakh+ users, is a shopping app for customers, not a distributor ordering system (pp. 15, 137).1
